1) Clarity
Diamond Clarity is just that... how clear the diamond is... does it have a mist inside of it... or look like you are staring into a clear pool of water? Diamond grades begin with Flawless followed by VVS-1, very, very small 1, VVS-2, very, very small 2, etc. flaws when viewed by 10X magnification (jewelers loupe) and down to flaws you may easily seen with your naked eye.

It takes years of experience to judge a diamonds clarity and identify the almost invisible flaws within a diamond that so dramatically reduce its value. This is particularly true of the solitaire diamond at the center of an engagement ring. The slightest blemish can significantly reduce the diamonds value. Before purchasing your diamond solitaire, ask to examine several stones through a diamond scope. Still cant decide which one to buy??? YOU MUST BE IN LOVE!!!
2) Carat Weight

Diamond prices increase dramatically with increasing weight... a half carat diamond may cost much more than twice the price of a quarter carat diamond of the same quality... a diamond mine moves some 250 tons of earth just to find a single 1-carat diamond... image what that would do your front lawn if you started digging for diamonds and what the neighbors would say...
3) Cut
A diamond cut is not unlike a hair cut... there are a few basic styles and from time to time new cuts are invented… but as opposed to barbers that talk with their customers and joke around... diamond cutting is a tedious, demanding job thats ruins your eyes and tries your patience… So what shapes do diamonds come in? The most popular shape is the round brilliant diamond… you cant go wrong with this one - they also come in oval, emerald, pear, heart, and marquis cuts... each has its own appeal… Round diamonds are the most brilliant and versatile – they go with every fashion and personality… they also cool when set together on a flat on white gold or yellow gold jewelry... just stunning!

Emerald cuts represent royalty and mysticism to people that wear them and their lovers. The Pear cut is symbolic of female sexuality and healing. Ask your diamond salesman to explain to the basics of proportions, symmetry, finish and polish, etc. - not so much for the education as to find out what kind of person he is... thats what they are paid for.
4) Color
Judging the Color of a diamond is not unlike wine tasting... its a delicate business and be careful not to swallow the diamond... just kidding... have your diamond salesman show you master color stones to compare with the stone he suggests you purchase.
Also, diamonds come in various colors... white, various shades of yellow, and may be colored yellow, green and blue. The color scale starts at D for the highest quality clear diamond... however, most people will not be able to see the difference in diamond colors E,F,G and H and perhaps I when set in a yellow gold band.
Now that you have learned a little bit about the 4 Cs, use them to make a wise purchase for life long pleasure from your diamond jewelry.
