However, what really matters is that the diamond currently in your possession has a certification. All reputable Jewelers sell diamonds certified by prominent independent gemological laboratories including the International Gemological Institute (IGI), believed to be the most reputable. Other respected laboratories who examine diamonds are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA); the American Gem Society (AGS); the European Gemological Laboratories (EGL) and GemEx Systems. In a diamond certificate, the name of the laboratory that examined your precious stone is extremely important. This is reflective of the credibility of your diamond “report” – another term for diamond certification. When buying your diamond, certification is essential. Although these stones look the same on the surface, not all are going to be of the quality you might be expecting. Thus, your diamond certification is your diamond’s written proof of its attributes. Imagine it being the certificate of your Louis Vuitton, the Official Receipt of your vehicle or the land title of your house. Simply put, the value is a lot lower without a certification. Without your certification, there is no assurance that the diamond you are buying is of the quality you’re paying for. Another way to look at the importance of your diamond’s certification is the investment side of the whole thing. In as much as diamonds are considered luxuries, a lot of people also value their diamonds as personal investments. As your investment, you should have proof of your asset’s marketability. In this case, the proof of your investment’s marketability is the diamond certificate. When time comes that you might need money for a different purpose or for a new venture, your diamond will be easier to sell with a certification. However, if you happen to own a diamond without certification, you need not worry. You can always ask your favorite jeweler to have your diamond sent to an independent gemological laboratory for examination. In fact, you can do it yourself. Just make sure you will have your stone examined by a reputable laboratory to give further credibility to your “diamond report” – another term for diamond certification. In case of loss, you should not worry because you can always ask for another copy of your certification from the gemological laboratory where you had it examined. There are boundless advantages to having your diamond certification. One of the important advantages is that you will know the precise grading of yours stone’s precious 4Cs. These 4Cs stand for carat, weight, cut, color and clarity. Knowing the grade of your diamond’s 4Cs will let you know its real value. Your diamond certification also arms you with the information you need to assess your precious stone’s fair market value. Another thing your certificate empowers you to do is to make an intelligent comparison with other diamonds – whether in the same jewelry store or in another. |
